Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
